NOT THE STRONG HAND OF THE LAW

As the Welsh boys have two players unavailable for their Eurp2016 semi-final, as a result of getting two yellow cards, we remind ourselves of the massive injustices carried out in football during major tournaments.

The 18th November 2009 was when Thierry Henry blatantly handled the ball inside the Irish penalty area, as he contributed to the Irish defeat in the second leg of a qualifying World Cup match. Television evidence showed the crime but none of the officials, the referee and his TWO assistants saw the event. Nor did the fourth official, nestled on the half way line between the technical areas.

This led to a major complaint by the FA of Ireland but FIFA stood firm, although later they did pay the FAI 5 million Euros as compensation! This eventually led to the inclusion of goal line referees' assistants and TV scrutiny, but too late for the Irish in 2009-10.

Elsewhere, yet another injustice was caused by Louis Suarez, unsurprisingly not through biting people, but by handballing the ball. With the score at 1-1, Suarez stopped  with his hand a final minute shot at goal by Ghanaian Dominic Adiyiah. Had the shot gone in, it would have won his team a place in the 2010 World Cup semi-final. The referee quite rightly sent Suarez off the pitch and while he was smarting on the touchline, Ghanaian, Asamoah Gyan, sent his penalty off the bar and into orbit.

This led to a penalty shoot out in which Uruguay goalie Fernando Muslera was a hero saving twice from Mensah and Adiyiah and the South Americans won.

The Uruguayans did not feel guilty about this stating that it was an instinctive reaction, they had been penalised, Ghana missed the subsequent penalty and then it wasn't Uruguay's fault that the Ghana lost the shoot out! Sporty!

and then there was Maradona!
Here's some others.
