ENGLAND BEAT GERMANY 5-1!

6th October 1923, in Div 2, Oldham Athletic played Manchester United and Oldham's Sam Wynne scored two goals, one a free kick, the other a penalty. Man U won the game 2-3 and Sam helped them along by scoring two for them as well.

On the same day, Andy Wilson scored all 5 for Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park against Nottingham Forest and remained their top scorer with 8 goals.
He was transferred to Chelsea that November for £6500, scoring 5 goals for the Pensioners in 19 games and was Chelsea's end of season top scorer too.

Both clubs were relegated, with Chelsea on 32 points and Middlesbrough 22. Wilson had another string to his bow (not archery); he played for Scotland v England in an international football match and then later turned out for England v Scotland in BOWLS.

AND of course in 2001, on this day, David Beckham made up for being sent off in a World Cup match v Argentina in 1998, when he took a free kick at Old Trafford for England in the 93rd minute and forced a 2-2 draw against Greece, having been 1-2 down. What happened to the Greek wall?

England survived and qualified for the W.C.Finals in Japan and Korea.

The Qualifying group 9, included England who eventually came top on goal difference with 17 points. Runners-up was Germany who also earned 17 points, then the ALL powerful Finland, Greece and Albania!!
If you remember, England won 1-5 away in Germany on the 1st September 2001. They had lost to Germany 0-1 earlier. It was a remarkable game and Germany had therefore suffered only their SECOND defeat in World Cup qualifying history, having played 62 games, winning 47, drawing 14 and losing 1 before this defeat.
Other qualifying results included a win in Greece 0-2, a draw in Finland 0-0 and a 2-1 win, two wins over Albania 3-1 and 2-0,

Germany, in second place, had to go to the Play Offs, winning over two legs against Ukraine 5-2.

In the finals, Germany played the Republic of Ireland,Cameroon and Saudi Arabia in the final group, beat Paraguay, USA and South Korea before losing to Brazil 0-2 in the final.

England played Sweden, Argentina and Nigeria in their group, then Denmark in a knock out round and lost to Brazil 1-2 in the quarters.

2002 FIFA World Cup.svgBit of a coincidence with the WC Rugby in Japan today eh!
