MARCH 14th-a bit of fun

Snowing outside and Gary Lineker apologising for his "slip"; we need cheering up: SO what about Blackburn Rovers? (The club's motto is "Arte et Labore", the Latin, meaning "By Skill and Hard Work".

Rovers is the only club to have been Premier League Champions and been relegated from it; 1998-9 and 2011-12. On March 14, 2000, a shrewd appointment of Graeme Souness as manager lead Rovers back into the top division. Previously Brian Kidd had failed to get a "tune" out of Rovers. Souness won promotion in 2001 and won the League Cup, the following season, before leaving for a bigger challenge at Newcastle United.

David Moyes, on March 14th, landed at Goodison Park with Everton struggling at the bottom of the "table" under Walter Smith. Moyes, took over, led the Toffees up the table and transformed them from relegation candidates to European contenders on a limited budget. He stayed there for 11 years.

Manchester City – 1937 Division One (top division) champions fail in spectacular fashion one year later.
The 1936/37 season was a landmark campaign for Manchester City, as the club won their first top flight title. The brilliantly named Wilf Wild was in charge, as City went on a 22-match unbeaten run to claim the title, as local rivals Man United were consigned to relegation.

A year later (1937-8) however, it was a different story, as City suffered a shock relegation, despite being the division's highest scorers. It was an embarrassing turn of events for Wild and the club, and remains to this day the only time the reigning English champions have been relegated the following season. The points spread between the league champions, Arsenal (52pts) and the team that finished bottom of the league, West Bromwich Albion (32pts), was a mere 16 points. Manchester United came 2nd in Division Two and of course were promoted with Aston Villa.

Leicester City (most recently in 2003–04) and Manchester City (most recently in 2000–01) had been relegated from the Premier League prior to winning their first titles.
