SOME WORLD CUP MOMENTS (FOR THE SCOTS AND OTHERS) a day late

8th July 1982 West Germany and France met in a World Cup semi-final in Spain. It will be remembered for a through ball which French defender, Patrick Battison chased towards the German goal. He got a foot on the ball as West German goalkeeper, Harald Schumacher, flung himself into the Frenchman, making no effort to get the ball, knocking out Battiston and breaking two of his teeth. The referee Charles Corver punished nobody and gave no free kick! The Germans won with their goalie saving two penalties in the final moments of a shoot out.

8th July 1990West Germany and Argentina were the World Cup finalists in 1986 and the same two countries met in the 1990 final. On this day in 1990 the Germans beat holders Argentina 1-0 to become World champions for the third time. Argentina had two players sent off – Pedro Monzón and Gustavo Dezotti – with the German goal being an Andreas Brehme penalty. The match was considered one of the poorest World Cup finals, with the first time a final was decided by a single goal.73,603 witnessed this!

Scotland qualified to the World Cup Finals, as runners up in their European Group Six. This was made up from 5 nations (unbeaten Yugoslavia, Scotland who won 4 Drew 2 and Lost 2, France W3 D3 L2, Norway and Cyprus).

In their "Final" group, the Scots did not progress in Italy. Brazil came top (Played 3 and won 3), Runners Up was Coasta Rica (P3 W2 D0 L1) and the Scots (P3 W1 L2) came third above Sweden (P3 W0 D3 L3). In their final group match, against Brazil, the Scots held on 0-0 up to the 82nd minute, when Brazil's Muller scored the lone goal. This left Scotland below Costa Rica in Third place in the Group and they had to go home.

Football On This Day – 8th July 2014
There was a time when you could have an argument about the biggest upset in World Cup history. Then on this day in 2014 Germany played Brazil in the World Cup - and the arguments were over. In the semi-final played in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Germany beat the hosts 7-1 and looked like they might get double-figures. It was Brazil's worst ever home defeat, their first home competitive defeat since 1975, the highest score in a World Cup semi and the worst defeat ever suffered by a host nation in the World Cup. The result was seen as a national humiliation in Brazil but on the internet a little more humour was found in it!
