Bradford City suffered a disaster on this day in 1985 when their match against Lincoln City was due to be played infront of a full house of 11,000 fans when their club was also due to celebrate winning the Third Division League title, however it all went tragically wrong when a fire broke out in the main stand at Valley Parade. I remember hearing the commentary when driving a minibus ful of school kids, who I was taking on a "field trip" to Northern Yorkshire. The radio was on to follow the match commentary but this turned out to be very sad listening. Hundreds of fans were there to celebrate but the afternoon turned into a disaster. Hundreds of fans were injured and 56 people lost their lives. It could have been many more-22 police and supporters were awarded bravery medals for their efforts in helping stjaff, fans and colleagues escape the blaze.
The ramblings of a football historian, whose interests lie in the origins of the game and the ups and downs of Spurs and Barnsley FC.
