Never heard of this? Me neither! Following the Heysel Disaster at the 1985 European Cup Final, English clubs were banned (indefinitely) by UEFA from playing in Europe. BUT, this decision was changed in 1990-1 and things got back to "almost" normal. There would be no English representation in the European Cup (as the tournament was known then) and Liverpool had an additional two year ban (considering the club's involvement in 1985), later reduced to one!! Runners up, Aston Villa competed in the UEFA Cup while Man Utd played in the Cup Winners' Cup.

The first night was very successful for "the English" when Aston Villa beat Czech club, Banik Ostrava at Villa Park 3-1, while United beat Hungarians, Pesci Munkas** at Old Trafford 2-0.
