OWLS BROUGHT DOWN BY SHOTS

October 3rd, the 1989/90 season, at Hillsborough, 4th Division Aldershot FC (the home of the British Army) visited 1st Division Sheffield Wednesday (home of British Steel) in a Littlewoods (home of the Pools) League Cup tie and held the Owls to a 0-0 draw at Hillsborough.

With high hopes of an aggregate win and a giant killing, the Shots hosted Wednesday at their own Recreation Ground.

Wednesday had only scored only twice in their opening nine matches that season and had played Norwich (lost), Luton (lost) Chelsea (lost) Everton (drawn) Arsenal (lost) and beaten Aston Villa.

They then met Aldershot (1st leg drew 0-0) and then lost league games to Millwall, drew with Coventry and then......... unfortunately, Sheffield Wednesday, on November 4th, held their nerve and "turned up", along with just over 4,000 spectators, scoring an 8-0 win, a new away record for the tournament.

Steve Whitton (4) and Dalian Atkinson (3) did the damage. The two clubs have met only twice before; on November 1975 League Division 3- a 1-1 draw and then in February 1976 with the Sheffield club winning 3-1.

Wednesday "renewed with energy", then drew with Manchester Utd 0-0, lost to Tottenham 0-3, lost to Derby in the next round of the League Cup 2-1, and then lost to Wimbledon in the league 0-1.

A month later, Wednesday met Sheffield United in the Zenith Data Systema Cup and won 3-2!

Aldershot FC now plays in the National League and this week have played at Hartlepool (another ex-F.L. club) and lost 2-1, the winner coming in the 86 minute; it's a long time into the game to concede and then have face a long journey home.

The new Aldershot club was founded in 1992 following the demise of the original Hampshire club, following financial issues.
