On this day in 2001, Pep Guardiola failed a pre-match drugs' test, after his Brescia team's match with Lazio in Italy (of course). He thus faced a ban and fine. It was the second time that he had tested positive for nandrolone but the Spanish midfielder vehemently protested his innocence and threatened to quit football unless he could prove that he was not guilty. He was banned for four months but the Spaniard was appealed and was exonerated by the Italian FA in October 2007 due to an 'unstable urine' phenomenon found by WADA scientists and cleared on a technicality.
- Let's not get too excited but dear old Diego (Maradona, of course) on March 17, 1991, gave a random drug test revealed the presence of cocaine in his body. He was banned from professional soccer for fifteen months. When Maradona returned to professional soccer in 1992, he was overweight, depressed, and a diminished presence on the soccer field. Poor soul.
