TORQUAY GULLS BEACHED

Torquay United began with the merging of clubs from Ellacombe, Babbacombe and Torquay Town, eventually settling at Plainmoor, the present venue in 1910. The elevation of Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle to the Southern League at the end of World War I, prompted the emergence of a new professional Torquay United in 1921.  The club's first Football League campaign, in 1927, ended with United finishing bottom of Division Three (South).  Fortunately, re-election to the league was immediately confirmed.
A change to the league structure and abolition of the regional system placed United in the newly-formed Division Four in April 27, 1960. A series of well-known managers including Frank O’Farrell , Bruce Rioch, Cyril Knowles, Neil Warnock, Colin Lee and  Leroy Rosenior have guided the Gulls through various levels of football, notably in 2004, to Division One briefly. There have also been a number of Wembley visits for the Sherpa Vans trophy final, the FA Trophy and league play offs. The club was relegated out of the Football League in 2007, the first time in 80 years it had been a Conference outfit.  Sky Soccer TV presenter Helen Chamberlain, relives the ups and downs of the Gulls every Saturday.
A major revamp behind the scenes rescued the club from the brink of extinction and a new consortium containing lottery winner, Paul Bristow, helped to stabilise a financial crisis at Plainmoor.  In 2014 Torquay are destined for the Conference again along with Wycombe Wanderers. Let's hope the Gulls get their peckers up and fly back into the Football league. The club's website is entertaining and worth a trawl.
