Founded in 1973, the club has developed, with women joining the fray in 1981 and in 1984 Steve Walsh claimed a world record in scoring 17 goals in one recorded match when his team won 21-0.
Unfortunately his team's record was pronounced null and void for fielding an ineligible player. No record record in the Guiness Book of Records etc etc.
In 2013 the club moved to their new site at Girraween, a multi sport project and development is under way.
I visited the local Life Saving and Surf Club tonight where a simple signature gets you into the bar, pokies and restaurant. Having swifted away a couple of schooners, I found on display amongst the various Life Saving Presidents, a tennis shirt of Evonne Goollagong, one of Australia's more important tennis players from decades gone by. Evonne's son was a soccer player who played in the National League, so that's a serious link...
I also saw a framed display with Dawn Fraser's Olympic gold medals. Likely to be replicas! but Dawn was a seriously good swimmer and she represented her country well in the pool.
With the Matilda's beating the highly respected Japanese Women 3-1 in World Cup Qualifiers, it is easy to forget how BLOODY good this small populated nation is at "games". But driving for miles as we have done this past few weeks, it is obvious that they all get a great start in life, either at school or at home.
Good on yer!
