NEPEAN'S POINT PART 2

The POINT is that Charles EB Nepean, an Old Carthusian, Oxford University Blue and Vicar in the Church of England became a First Class cricketer playing for Oxford University and Middlesex between 1870-74. A slow underarm bowler and wicket keeper, he played in the Gentlemen v Players match along side W.G.Grace in 1873.
He also played soccer for Charterhouse School, the Old Carthusians and Oxford University. He was chosen to play in goal in the 1872 Final but was "unavailable".
In 1874 he kept goal bravely for the Oxford side (below) which beat the Royal Engineers 2-0 in the F.A. Cup Final. Nepean is standing on the right as we look at the photo.

Nepean's closest link to Scotland was a cousin who married a Scot, so he apparently, in those days, qualified to play for Scotland in one of the "pseudo" early internationals (sort of unofficial matches) against the English on the 19th November 1870.
Arthur Kinnaird, the well known Old Etonian, commandeered anyone who could play the game into his Scottish team assuming they had some sort of link to Scotland. The two teams met at The Oval with the English team organised by Charles Alcock. England won 1-0. In the return match on 25th February 1871, Nepean scored in a 1-1 draw, when the "question of supremacy remained undecided". On 18th November 1871 England beat Scotland 2-1.
On the 24th February 1872 he played in goal during a 1-0 defeat, although reports say that he inter-changed positions during these games.
