DERBY KILLS
On March 1st 1980 Wilfred Ralph (Dixie) Dean died attending an Everton v Liverpool derby at Goodison Park.
He played 399 times for Everton and scored 349 goals, including 37 hat tricks.
In the 1927/8 season Dean scored 60 goals, an all time record beating George Camsell's record of 59 goals for Middlesbrough in 1926/7.
Dean needed seven goals with two games left in the season and in the penultimate game he scored 4 against Burnley.
On the 5th of May 1928 a large crowd of over 48,000 turned up to see the new league champions draw 3-3 at home with Arsenal.
Dean bagged 3 goals in the two FA Cup matches Everton played. Dean only missed 3 games that season. He scored three goals in FA Cup games.
Everton reached the Fourth Round but lost 4-3 at Arsenal, having beaten Preston NE 0-3 away.
Everton played 42 matches, winning 20 (two fewer than Huddersfield who came second) but drawing 13 and losing 9 games. The Toffees scored 102 goals and conceded 66,
He stayed at Everton until 1937/8.
