WREXHAM'S CUP RUN FLOWETH OVER

It wasn't stags invading the pitch at the McCain (Frozen food Co) Stadium, Scarborough on December 7th 1990 and it certainly wasn't lots of supporters, because through terrible weather, especially rain, only 625 hardy souls turned up to see their local lads 2-4 loss against Wrexham. It was a 4th Division game at the time and the lowest attendance ever recorded.

Lying bottom of Division 4, the home side avoided relegation to the Conference because the Football League had increased its numbers. The 625 supporters (mostly Scarborough fans) were relieved.

As Welsh FA Cup holders, Wrexham (nice badge) found more exciting games in the European Cup Winners Cup, as it was known then and played Lyngby Boldklub from Copenhagen on September 19th and on the 3rd of October, drawing 0-0 at home and winning 1-0 away.

Cup football came thick and fast to Wrexham in the Autumn, who had met York City on August 28th and September 4th winning 1-0 and 2-0 in the League Cup.

Everton was the next hurdle and the Wrexham League Cup run ended with an aggregate score of 0-5, matches played at the end of September and then October 9th.

Wrexham's next ties in Europe were on October 23rd and November 7th against Manchester United, the English FA winners and that ended the Wrexham experience with defeats, 0-3 away and 0-2 at home.

For the away tie, Wrexham, only 50 miles away had to follow UEFA Rules and leave for their match 24 hours before hand, just in case there was a delay in transport, nuclear holocaust, meteor strike.

On November 17th Halifax Town were entertaining at The Shay beating Wrexham 2-3.
After that, from November 24th, Wrexham had no more cup commitments and played 32 League matches on the trot, ending up in the league 24th out of 24! But avoiding the step down. Until recently!!
