CHARITY/COMMUNITY SHIELD

The 8th August 1992, was the day that Eric Cantona scored a hat trick at Wembley in the opening game of the new Association Football 1992-3 Season. The Charity Shield heralds a new season and the match was usually played between the FA Cup winners and the Football League Division One Champions. On this day Leeds Utd, the League Winners,  beat Liverpool, Cup holders, in a 4-3 thriller.

Leeds United - on this day: Eric Cantona bags Wembley hat-trick ...

The traditional match was first held in 1908 and was originally known as the Sheriff of London Charity Shield. Prior to that there was a game played between the Professionals and The Amateurs, to "show case the game". There was not a lot between the two back then.

But eventually, the two "groups" fell out and by 1908, the professionals "won the day" and the Football League Division One Champions (Manchester Utd) played QPR (The Winners of the Southern League- as was played for at the time), at Stamford Bridge, winning 4-0 after a 1-1 draw.

In 1913, the Shield was played for by The Amateurs and The Professionals, but by 1921 it involved the FA Cup Winners and the League Winners again.

In 1927 The Cup Winners, Cardiff City played The Corinthians (The famous amateurs) who were chosen to be an opposition when Newcastle Utd declined the honour to play in the game.

In 1930 it went back to a game between the League Winners and the Cup Winners.

In 1950 the England World Cup squad, shortly destined for disaster in Brazil, played The FA XI, due to tour Canada. Look back at the blog recently for more on these two squads. Here is the history:

In 1961 Tottenham, as Double winners couldn't play themselves, so The FA XI stood up as opposition.

In 1971 Arsenal, as Double Winners, were on tour so Division Two champions Leicester City played Liverpool who were FA Cup Runners-up.

In 1972 Derby and Leeds Utd refused to play each other so Manchester City (4th in the top division) played Aston Villa, who were Division 3 winners.

In 1973 Liverpool and Sunderland declined the invitation, so Manchester City played Second Division Champions, Burnley.

From 1993 onwards the Premier League winners played the FA Cup Winners.

In 2002 due to financial "irregularities" the word "Charity" was removed from the title and the word "Community" inserted, Arsenal winning the trophy over Liverpool.

In 2016 the FA Silversmith Thomas Lyte restored the 1908 Shield to mark the 50th anniversary of England's win over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup.

It was sold at auction for £40,000 with the money going to the Bobby Moore Cancer Fund, an FA Charity partner in 2016. The most recent holders are Manchester City, who have won the Shield 6 times.

Others include: United 17 won/4 shared, Arsenal 14/1, Liverpool 10/5, Everton 8/1. Tottenham H 4/3
