BUFFON

Now this one takes some believing - but its true. The Second Division fixture at Turf Moor between Burnley and Grimsby Town on February 13th (unlucky for some) in 1909, saw four separate penalties being awarded to Burnley. Three of those penalties were saved by the Grimsby goalkeeper Walter Scott - and they were saved by the 'keeper not hit wide by the penalty takers.

Burnley did score from the other penalty - but wouldn't it be great to have a keeper like that playing for England in penalty shoot-outs! Burnley won the match 2-0 with Grimsby playing with 10 men for 70 minutes because of an injury - there were no subs in those days.Mind you there are more penalty heroes......

Inter Milan's captain, the Slovenian, Samir Handanovic (good name for a goalie?) is the most successful goalkeeper when it comes to stopping penalties. He has managed to save 38 penalties in his career so far, the most in history.

Handanovic is followed by former Italy and Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon (bad name for a goalie?) who has stopped 30 penalties. He turned out for Juve from 2001-18 509 times but overall, since 1990, he played 912 times for Parma, Juve, PSG and Juve (again) and 176 times for Italy since 1997. He is still playing with his boyhood club, Parma Calcio (Calcio is the original Italian name for football), a Seria B club.

In the 2006 World Cup, Buffon led Italy to the championship, conceding only two goals in 7 games and keeping 5 clean sheets (no goals let in), which was a new World Cup record at that time.
and if you are really at a loss for something to do, here are some World Cup stats.
