REBECCA BLOWS HER WHISTLE

Rebecca Welch became the first woman referee to take charge of a men's FA Cup third-round tie on Saturday when she took charge of Plymouth's 1-0 win against Birmingham.

The League One club knocked out the Championship side, thanks to substitute Ryan Law's extra-time winner. Lee Bowyer's side finished the game with 10 men after George Friend was sent off for picking up two yellow cards in the second half. Welch is no stranger to making history as last year she became the first female referee to be appointed to an English Football League match earlier.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_AG09TfxyI

In April 2021, she took charge of Harrogate's 2-0 Sky Bet League Two defeat at home to Port Vale and in the summer, she was appointed to the EFL's National Group list for the men's professional game. She was appointed to UEFA's elite female list of referees last year. The team of officials will be led by Washington-born Rebecca Welch, who is a Category 1 FIFA referee officiating in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League (WSL), men’s National League Premier and Premier League 2.

The 38-year-old has refereed men's matches in the National League plus in elite women's games, including the 2017 FA Cup final.  Welch was born in the town of Washington in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. She became a qualified referee in 2010 and continued her day job as an administrator in the NHS until two years' ago. The official has also overseen games in the Women's Super League and the 2020 women's Community Shield.

A keen player herself at one stage, Welch eventually studied to be a referee with Durham County Football Association. She started by taking charge of university games as well as Sunday League matches, before officiating games in the Women’s Super League. Welch has established herself as one of the leading officials in the women’s game and was the referee for the 2017 and 2020 Women’s FA Cup Finals. She also reffed the 2020 FA Women’s Community Shield, which was played at Wembley and won by Chelsea. In December 2020, she added to UEFA's Elite Women's list, enabling her to referee at international games. Stephanie Frappart of France is one I have written about before. Amy Fearn was the first women to referee a game in the main draw of the FA Cup, when she oversaw Dover beating Corby in the Cup's first round in 2013.  More on Women and refereeing......
