June 9th 1979: There was a time when it seemed that pop stars wanted to be footballers and footballers wanted to be pop stars. Kevin Keegan is an example. June 9th 1979.... he released a single, Head Over Heals in Love, the B side was Move On Down. It wasn't his first single - It Ain't Easy bombed in 1972 but Head Over Heals reached 31 in the UK pop charts. It did even better in Germany, where Keegan was playing for Hamburg at the time; it reached number 10 in the charts. He returned to English football in 1980 and saw the release of another single, named England, but by then any dreams of pop stardom were long gone. But then, the Gallagher brothers didn't make the Manchester City first team either!
The list below contains singles recorded by a professional football team or individual player which spent at least one week in the UK Top 75. It does not contain singles recorded in tribute to football teams by existing bands or groups of fans such as the 1975 hit "Viva El Fulham" by Tony Rees and the Cottagers, or other hits with a general football theme such as the four-time number on "Three Lions" by The Lightning Seeds, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.
