COMING OUT OF THE CUPBOARD.

I came across this celebratory shirt in the wardrobe of my holiday let in Point Lonsdale; the framed shirt was tucked away, far from the public eye. Greek footballers had a major influence on Australian football (soccer) history. Boulis Kambouropoulos, once the shirt owner, was a Greek footballer (better call him a soccer player),  plying his trade in Australia. This famous number 8 arrived from Olympiacos FC in Greece ( a team I have had the pleasure to have seen play, way back) and as an emerging young talent, he played a leading role in the "South Melbourne Hellas" golden era.

Boulis (back row/fourth from right) represented the club between 1962 and 1972, winning FIVE Victorian State League championships and being a favourite amongst the supporters. He passed away tragically in 1995 aged only 52.
He is rated as a member of the South Melbourne "Team of the Century", playing between 1962-72. 16 players were selected for thre final team. Coach was Manny Poulakakis. Michael Petrovic GK, Mehmet Durakovic, Alan Davidson, Steve Blair, Ange Postecouglou (capt), Paul Wade, John Margaritis, Oscar Crino, Jim Pyrgolios, Jimmy Armstrong, Paul Trimboli. There were five players on the substitutes' bench: Peter Laumets (goalkeeper) John Bedford (defender) Takis Mantarakis (defender) Boulis Kambouropoulos (midfielder) Mike Petersen (midfielder) One of the State's prolific forwards, Armstrong was born on March 21st 1943. He played semi-pro for Renfrew and Yoker Athletic, before emigfrating to Australia in 1966, receiving international clearance from Yoker Athletic, joining Hakoah in the Victorian State League, when he scored a hat trick against Alexander in a 4-1 win. Scoring 20 goals in as many matches, he helped Hakoah to a fourth place in the division, with 7 goals and a victory in the Dockerty Cup. Prolific in the following seasons, he was awarded Player of the Season, attracting South Melbourne Hellas who duly signed him in 1970. In seven seasons he scored 89 goals in 150 league games, topping the state League honours twice and being awarded the Bill Fleming Medal in 1974. His club won three State Championships in that period.
He played for the State team against Santos, Cruzeiro, Manchester United, Werder Bremen  and BRISTOL ROVERS!!! and internationally, for Australia, scoring twice in four matches. He is in the Australian Hall of Fame.

MARCH 30th at the Double

The Preston of 1888-9 was not going to fail at the last hurdle. Playing in the newly formed Football League, the club won 18 and drew 4 of its 22 matches, 74 goals were scored for and 15 against. No other team could match the "Invincibles".

Preston, on Saturday March 30th, did the Double, by winning the FA Cup 3-0 against Wolves, a team that came third in the league. Preston did not concede a single goal during their cup run and put on a wonderful show at the Oval, kicking off at a balmy 4pm, with 22,000 watching. Major Marindin reffed!

Wolves had beaten the Old Carthusians 4-3 in the First Round of the FA Cup, the old boys having been spared the four qualifying rounds. Preston, as a league member, were also spared the early rounds and beat Bootle 3-0 away at first.

Grimsby Town were beaten 2-0 on the Lincolnshire coast as the lads from Cleethorpes had waded their way through six qualifying games and five rounds to meet the best team in the land. Preston then beat Birmingham St George's 2-0 and West Bromwich in the semi-final 1-0. It might have been the OCs had ther old boys' side taken their chances.

So it was the first Double. The following season Preston won the league again, only two points ahead of Everton and lost in the quarter-final of the cup to Bolton Wanderers 2-3. From 1890-1 to 1892-3, Preston came second in the league but then in 1893-4 they came 14th out of the extended division of 16 teams. It was typical, that Major Sudell who had run the club like a dictator through the great period, was overthrown and in June 1893 the club was created into a Limited Company with a new board of directors. In 1895, the Major was charged with embezzling club funds, he was jailed and then emigrated to South Africa where he died in 1911. This rather spoilt the reputation of a man who set out to build the "finest team in the country" acquiring the best players in the game, which happened.

Players came and went with poor results that meant  the club had to play in a "Test Match" against Notts County at the end of the season to avoid the "drop" to the second division. Preston survived 4-0. Beneath Preston were Darwen and Newton Heath, both were relegated.

WHEN CUP FINALS WERE PLAYED ON MARCH 29th

There have been a number of FA Cup Finals held on March 29th

March 29th 1873 The Wanderers v Oxford University 2-0 at Lillie Bidge. Att: 3,000
The Lillie Bridge Grounds, was a sports' ground on the Fulham side of West Brompton, London. It opened in 1866, coinciding with the opening of the local railway station. It was named after the local landowner, Sir John Scott Lillie (1790–1868) and the Lillie Bridge over the West London Line, that links Old Brompton Road with Lillie Road. The grounds were adjacent to the railway on the south side of Lillie Road. Although geographically near to present day Stamford Bridge, there was never direct access, there being the 13 acre now defunct Western Hospital site between the two. The ground was the scene in its day of many sports including athletics, boxing, cricket, cycling and football, and hosted the FA Cup Final in 1873The Wanderers after winning the first FA Cup final in 1872, were allowed to defend the cup in the second final of 1873 with choice of venue. Not having a ground of their own, they chose Lillie Bridge and Oxford University were defeated 2–0. The attendance was over 1,000 higher than the previous final.Wanderers as winners of the first FA Challenge Cup, “ were responsible for choosing Lillie Bridge as the venue for the 1873 final. As holders they had earned the privilege not only of a bye to the final but also the choice of where the game would be played, and as their name suggests, without a home ground to call their own, club officials decided on the west London ground.

Their opponents were Oxford University, whose appearance in that particular final directly impacted the game's kick-off time. On the same day “ 29 March 1873, “ the annual Oxford-Cambridge University boat race took place on the Thames. As it was scheduled for the afternoon, the FA Cup final was moved to the morning to accommodate spectators who wished to watch both events. Whether this helped the attendance at the football is up for debate; the official attendance at the game was 3000, a figure likely dwarfed by the number of people who would have lined the banks of the river to watch the two crews rowing from Putney to Mortlake. Anyone supporting Oxford University at both events would have been doubly disappointed: the rowers' three length defeat by Cambridge was preceded by defeat at the football. 1879: Old Etonians v Clapham Rovers. 1-0. Att:5,000 1882: Old Etonians beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Att:6,500. 1883: Blackburn Olympic (not Rovers) beat the Old Etonians 1-0 aet. Att:8,000.

On March 29th 1884, Blackburn Rovers began a period of dominance in English football, beating Queen's Park (yes, the Scottish club) at the Oval, 2-1. Att:4,000.

The match was refereed by Major Francis Marindin, an Old Etonian, who reffed 8 finals. It was his 16th year as President of the FA, he was one of the founders of the FA Cup tournament, he helped found the Royal Engineers FC, and was an Officer Of Railways at the Board of Trade. He was knighted in 1897.

In 1885 (not March 29th!) Queen's Park met Blackburn Rovers again and Rovers won 2-0 at The Oval. Marindin reffed. Att:12,500

In 1886 (not 29th March) Rovers and WBA drew 0-0 the Cup Final first (15,000) at The Oval and Rovers won the replay 2-0 (12,000) at The Racecourse Ground, Derby. Marindin reffed.
It closed in 1888 following a riot reported in The Times.

On March 29th 1890, at the Oval, The Battle of the Roses took place, as an FA Cup Final was staged between Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday. It was the Rovers who won 6-1, in front of 20,000. With 9 internationals in their side, Bill Townley, one of them, scored the first hat trick in an FA Cup Final. Sheffield Wednesday were in the Football Alliance at the time. Marindin reffed.

In 1891, at The Oval, Marindin didn't ref, Rovers won the Cup for the 5th time, beating Notts County 3-1. James Forrest won his 5th Cup winners medal. He was the first professional to play for England.

Rovers next Cup Final was in 1928 when Rovers beat the Terriers (Huddersfield Town) 3-1 at a Wembley packed with over a 92,000 crowd. By that time the League programme meant that Cup Finals were played in late April.
This was the first Cup Final since 1910 that BOTH SIDES scored. Rovers narrowly avoided relegation and Town were top dogs! being League Champions in 1924, 1925 and 1926 and runners up in 1927 and 1928.

Rovers then lost to Wolves in the 1960 Cup Final 0-3.

Ties BEGAN this season, with a Preliminary Rd on August 6th 2022, when 416 clubs joined in. Early upsets included:

P.s, Middlesex County Cricket Club  moved to Lillie Bridge in 1869. WG Grace scored several centuries here before the MCCC left in 1872 to find better quality turf at Lord's.

ENGLAND, MAN U, ARSENAL, ALBANIA AND CHARTERHOUSE

28th March 2001 Seven Manchester United players were in the England team that faced Albania in Tirana, in a World Cup qualifier. Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, David Beckham Paul Scholes and Andy Cole were in the starting line-up with second half subs Wes Brown and Teddy Sheringham, taking the number to seven. That equalled the record of seven Arsenal players in the England team in the 1934 friendly against Italy played at Highbury.

The  Albanian national football team was first formed in October 1946 playing against near neighbours Yugoslavia in Tirana losing 2-3. The "Eagles" have been as high as 22nd and as low as 124th in FIFA Ranking.

Albania gets a few mentions in previous blogs and this one includes the "mysterious East European country" and mentions the famous C.B.Fry, Old Carthusian (old boy of Charterhouse School).

On March 28th 2001, the 3-1 thumping of that well known footballing power, Albania, sent a vibration through the European football fraternity, as the "Manchester United" squad  provided 7 England players, taking part in a World Cup qualifier.
Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Andy Cole and used subs Teddy Sheringham and Wes Brown. Scholes, Cole and Owen scored. Where are they NOW?
This international selection, equalled Arsenal's provision of  "SEVEN international caps in one England game from one club".
Arsenal had "lent" 7 of their 1934 squad to England in a friendly international against Italy at Highbury. (Moss, Male, Hapgood, Copping, Bowden, Drake, Bastin).
Eric Brook missed a penalty and therefore a hat trick! bUT England won 3-2.
A game that was notorious for its violence. Worth a read!

Today, Poland beat Albania in a EURO Qualifier at home 1-0. A goal from Swiderski, settled the Group E tie. Match Day 2/10.
Yesterday in a Euro qualifier, England beat Ukraine 2-0 .

27th MARCH: A SIGNIFICANT DATE

Big Day for some today! Well I am celebrating a birthday! BUT more importantly on the 27th March 2004 in a League Division 2 match - Chesterfield drew with  4-4 Grimsby; the attendance at Chesterfield's home, Saltergate, 4,444. What were the odds of that happening?! However, referee Fraser Stretton, was not 44 years old.

Cardiff City's Chris Gunter made his full international debut for Wales in May 2007 in a friendly fixture against New Zealand. In 2018 the full-back overtook Neville Southall as the most capped Welshman when making his 93rd appearance for Wales, against China, a total that was helped by a remarkable run of 63 consecutive appearances for his country.
On 27th March 2021, by then, he was a 31-year-old Charlton Athletic player - he became the first Welshman to win 100 caps for his country in a friendly against Mexico at the Cardiff City stadium. Sadly the Cardiff stands weren't full of fans to witness that great achievement. The attendance was 0......due to Covid!Have a good day.

WOLVES, MARINERS, IRONS, RED DEVILS, CHERRIES, LATICS

On 25th March 1939, a record attendance for Old Trafford was set on this day when a crowd of 76,962 was present at the FA Cup semi-final between Wolves and Grimsby. Wolves won 5-0. FA Cup results 1938/39 below:

https://www.footballsite.co.uk/Statistics/Seasons/1938-39/F.A.Cup1938-39.html

Post war, on September 3rd 1946, 18,327, watched Grimsby (The Mariners) met Wolves in Division One, playing out a 0-0 draw.

On This Day in 1980, Ian Botham was best known as a cricketer, but he made his debut as a footballer for Scunthorpe United (nickname, The Irons), coming on as a sub in the Division 4 match at Bournemouth a 3-3 draw in front of a crowd of 2,675.

He couldn't be described as a footballing legend at the Old Show Ground (Scunny's ground) - he didn't make his starting debut for another 2 years (and that a 2-7 home defeat by Wigan seen by 2,599). In all Botham played for Scunthorpe in 11 League matches and an FA Cup tie. And of course, with a record like that was later awarded a benefit match....against Manchester United. Well deserved!!

VERSUS ITALY AND WELL DONE GARETH

On the 24th March 2007 England Under 21s met their Italian counterparts in the first match at the new Wembley Stadium, in front of a 55,700 crowd. Giampaolo Pazzini scored the first goal after just 29 seconds and went on to score a hat-trick in the 3-3 draw. England’s goals came from David Bentley, Wayne Routledge and Matt Derbyshire.

Today, nearly to the day, I read that our Seniors had gained a valuable win in the 2023 European Championship Qualifier on March 23rd.

Today, England won an important victory over Italy, present European Champions, as Gareth Southgate becomes only the third England manager to clock up 50 wins after Walter Winterbottom and Sir Alf Ramsey. Mind you, there are more games played internationally now than in the past, certainly more competition fixtures also. How many England managers have there been looking after these results?
