It was "quiet man", Denis Irwin, who played amongst a Manchester United squad of big names and egos, in the 1990s. Denis, the Irish full back, deserved a Testimonial in 2000, following ten years of service! and he got one!
One was arranged against local rivals, Manchester City, which was held on this day at Old Trafford. Manager Joe Royle forget to tell his players that it was only a friendly.....it's hard to believe that either side would understand that description of their Manchester Derby. City "new boy", George Weah, remember him?? made a clumsey (competitive?) challenge on Irwin, early in the game and Denis had to be stretchered off!! Have a look....

The match, while only arranged as a celebration of Irwin's 10 years with the club, was a bit competitive and Irwin had to be substituted . Despite the injury, the game ended with a 2-0 victory for Manchester United, with goals from Teddy Sheringham and Andy Cole. Attendance 45,158 Scorers: Sheringham(36), Cole(44)
