Six fun and interesting facts about the Premier League. Sometimes known as the "beautiful game", football is the most popular sport in the world. The Premier League is seen as the highest level of professional football in England. How much do you actually know about it?
1. It all began on Saturday 15th August, 1992
The Premier League was founded in 1992, with the first ever game played on Saturday 15 August of that year. The league plays out between August and May, with football teams competing to be crowned English champions. These days, each team plays a total of 38 matches and many of the games are broadcast on TV, with millions in the UK watching every week.
2. There used to be 22 teams
Nowadays, there are 20 teams in the Premier League, but when it first began, there were 22 and those first 22 members were Arsenal, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Everton, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Oldham Athletic, Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wimbledon.
3. The first Premier League goal took just five minutes
Sheffield United player Brian Deane scored the first ever Premier League goal on 15 August at 3:05pm in their opening game of the season against Manchester United. Sheffield United went on to win 2-1. “Everybody was buzzing. The crowd were going barmy. It was great.”– Brian Deane
4. Just six teams have played in every season since it began
Just six of the 22 teams that made their debut in the Premier League in 1992 have remained there consistently ever since – Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
5. Alan Shearer is the league's top goalscorer of all time and most clean sheets.
The top Premier League goalscorer of all time is former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer. Shearer, who also played for Southampton and Blackburn Rovers during his career, holds the record with 260 goals scored in the competition. Goalkeeper, Petr Cech, who played for Chelsea, and later Arsenal, has 202 clean sheets, the most of any keeper since the league began.
6. Arsenal nicknamed 'The Invincibles'
Only Arsenal have managed to make it through the entire competition without losing a game, which they achieved in 2003-04 under manager Arsene Wenger. They ended the season with 26 wins, 12 draws and no defeats and earned themselves the nickname "The Invincibles".
