Tyne Tees TV asked Jack Charlton for an interview on this day, so Jack, at the time, the Leeds defender and World Cup Winner (1966!!) agreed and as many will know, he was a "straight talker". Jack admitted that there would be a few vendettas followed in football but he stated that "I couldn't mention any names, but I have a little book with two names in it . And if I get the chance to "do" them, I will. I will make them suffer before I pack it in. If I can kick them four yards over the touchline, I will!!"
The interview was only presented in the north of England but of course the national press soon got wind of this and the FA eventually charged Jack with bringing the game into disrepute. Meanwhile, columnists across the nation from The Daily Express ("These sickening comments!") and the usually measured, John Arlott in "The Guardian" queued up to give Big Jack a metaphorical shoeing- for example, "The menace of condoned thuggery". Even Jack's more sensible brother, Bobby, said; "Jack must know what effect this is having, that it is not doing the game any good."Jack's response was calm and considered..."I don't know what all the fuss is about! I think some of the words have been taken out of context, but I will stand by what I said. I am not a dirty player but what I referred to does happen. I was asked a question and I answered it honestly. " By the end of the month the matter had been dropped by the FA and newspapers alike. In some respect the fuss seems a sign of more innocent times, then again, in 2002, when Roy Keane admitted to "lying in wait for Alf-Inge Haaland", the FA was equally quick to pounce. Note who the referee was!!
