ROGER STEER-ANOTHER LEGEND

Looks like legends' week this week, with Dennis Bergkamp celebrating his 49th birthday today. But I am delighted to highlight the "retirement" of Roger Steer, whom I played with and against in Surrey for a number of years at a variety of clubs, turning out for over 2,000 games. He has not yet given me the complete run down of these......I wish I had kept a full record of my matches, but university got in the way!
Roger retired this week having completed his "season" and his career at  Westfield FC.
He played for his local West Byfleet School and Woking Schools where he joined in a tour of Canada. Surrey Schools selected him up too.

Roger was a Chelsea Youth player in the 1960s and he joined Woking FC in 1972, playing over 250 games.

He moved to Sutton United and did a little bit of journeyman stuff around Surrey and the home counties at Walton and Hersham FC,  Wokingham Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Addlestone and Weybridge, Camberley Town before joining the Corinthian Casuals, probably the World's best known historic club.

Roger took his Coaching Badges at the Casuals and spent 9 years there, the last 3 as player-manager. He helped the club to promotion to the Isthmian League which then was remarkable as the CCFC are a truly amateur club. They were also founder members of the Isthmian League.

Roger then managed Godalming Town, near Charterhouse and was helpful in letting me bring our school teams to play against his youth teams. GTFC earned an important promotion from "County League" to the Isthmian and they won Combined Counties League Cup in 2007.
To keep himself slim he continued to play, until 63 years old, for the Corinthian Casuals Schools' XI, who were "Vets", taking the true standards of the great game to young players all round the south of England and occasionally on tours abroad, including the celebratory visit to the Corinthian Club in Brazil in 2014, playing in the Corinthians brand new stadium.
Amusingly named at the "Peter Pan" of Football, he is now Football Director of Westfield FC where he helps with coaching and gives advice to all ages. Good Luck, Roger...Veterans Football Calls...I'm just off to Penistone Church FC for an hour.
