MAY 11th EAGLES AND SEAGULLS

On May 11th 1985, the terrible fire tragedy at Valley Parade occurred when a discarded cigarette fell between the wooden floorboards of the main stand and caused a major fire that killed 56 supporters and injured over 250. I remember driving up the M1 with some geographers, heading for a weekend in the Peak District, listening to the news as it came over the minibus' radio and it made for grim listening.
Bradford City were playing Lincoln City in a standard end of season league game. The game is recorded as a 0-0 draw. Previously on December 22nd 1984, Lincoln had lost 1-2 at home to Bradford.
Elsewhere on May 11th 1979, Crystal Palace were playing Burnley at home and having scored through the season, fewer goals than relegated Sheffield United, the Eagles had everything to play for. Their League record in the end was P42 W19 D19 L4 GF51 GA24 Pts 57.
Brighton came second, ONE point behind with Goals For 72 Against 39. Brighton had won more games than Palace (23) but lost more (9).
Burnley had beaten Palace 2-1 at Turf Moor in December (and were 13th in the Division).

Palace had reached the 5th Round of the FA Cup and also was involved in a three tie 3rd Rd fixture in the Football League Cup against Aston Villa, so there were extra games being slipped into Palace's fixture card.

Palace were fourth in the Second Division and the three teams sitting above them had all completed their matches. Palace's fixtures had been affected by bad weather, so, Terry Venables' side needed to win to get the Divison Title and promotion (denying rivals Brighton and HA the title).
A draw would send them up with no title and
a defeat would condemn Palace and Terry Venables to another season in Div. 2.

It was a Friday night in May, perfect for staging the A23 Derby. Nearly 52,500 fans packed into Selhurst Park but they saw a disappointing 0-0 first half.  All was not lost though, as Ian Walsh
and then Dave Swindlehurst scored two in the last 15 minutes to send the Eagles up. NICE BARNET.............
