COCKERELS v EAGLES

BIG DAY TODAY. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is being christened officially having had an U18 game and a Veterans show piece to test out the various safety regulations and so on.

The game this evening is a Premier League match against Crystal Palace, from south of the river. The last time the Eagles met the Spurs it was a 2-0 win for the South Londoners 2-0 in the FA Cup. How good would it have been for Spurs to return to the Cup Final venue, Wembley, their temporary home recently?

The two teams met recently in the Premier League at Selhurst Park, the Spurs winning 1-0.
In history, Tottenham have won 29, drawn 13 and lost 12 matches between the two.

They first met at White Hart Lane on October 6th 1906 with the Spurs winning 3-0 in the Southern League. Thomas Morris, Charlie Hewitt and the very famous Vivian Woodward scored one each in front of 20,000.

The two teams then had a season in the Western League for one season (1908), Spurs joined the Football League in later in next season.  Palace joined the expanded Football League, the Third Division in 1920, winning the title that season by 5 points from fellow new comers Southampton. Palace were promoted and the Saints had to wait another year to win the expanded 3rd Division South title on goal average, having earned 61 points along with Plymouth. Only one team was promoted.

There was an FA Cup meeting on January 12th 1924 and they finally got together again in the First Division on August 23 1969.

The 1969 game was at Selhurst Park with Spurs winning 2-0. They met briefly in 1977 in Division 2 and got back together in Division One in 1980 and then in the Premier League in 1993. Recently there was gap in fixtures between 1998 and 2004 and then 2005 and 2013.
