November 4th 1952 saw the emergence of the very successful Manchester United Youth team, a team that included some of the greatest players later to play in the English First Division-the Busby Babes.
That season the United Youth team played the Nantwich Town Youth XI in the second round of the FA Youth Cup, beating the Non-League side 23-0. In the United side was Duncan Edwards who scored 5. Played at the Cliff Training Ground 2,600 turned out to see this one sided affair.
David Pegg scored 5 (died in air crash), John Docherty 5, Eddie Lewis 4, Alan Morton 2, Albert Scanlon 1 (suffered injuries in the Air crash), + own goal made up the total.
Billy Whelan and Eddie Colman also played in the Youth team and both died in Munich.
Duncan Edwards, one of the United Youth team that also died in the Munich Air disaster in 1958.
In the final, United beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 7-1 and drew 2-2 in two legs.
1953-4 United beat Wolves again 5-4 on agg.
1954-5 United beat WBA 7-1 agg
1955-6 United beat Chesterfield 4-3 agg
1956-7 United beat West Ham Utd 8-2 agg
Preparation for the future!! Clearly some prior investment in the future of the club. The Munich Air Disaster claimed a few of this squad.
NOT SO FOR WALES in 1933!
On November 4th 1933 Wales played Northern Ireland in the Home Internationals when team selector Ted Robins had to phone around the clubs to see who was available.
One available player was Alf Day from Tottenham Hotspur who was a Non-League playing reserve who played in the London Combination League, later made his debut for Spurs in 1934. He never played for Wales again but did cruise around Millwall, Southampton, Tranmere Rovers and Swindon Town up to the war, making a few dozen appearances.
Four international debuts were made in this fixture including Tommy Mills of Clapton Orient (later Leyton Orient), Harry Hanford (Swansea), David Jones (Leicester City), Eugene O'Callaghan (beautiful Welsh name) from Spurs, who was the team's most experienced player in his 9th appearance. The Welsh drew 1-1. Planning for the future!
