THE HAND GRENADE DIDN'T GET HIM

You may remember Chic Brodie making the headlines when he was playing in goal for Brentford, a game that ended his career. He was playing in a league game in 1970 at Colchester Utd when he went to retrieve a speculative through ball on the edge of his penalty area. A stray dog that had previously run onto the pitch, chased the ball and ended up crashing into Chic's knee, causing irreparable damage to his ligaments He did manage a few more games but he was never quite the same.

Chic had been at Manchester City, as an understudy to Bert Trautmann, who wasn't going to be replaced! Chic signed for Aldershot and served his National Service in the town as well as representing the town side.  He had also played at Gillingham, Wolves, Northampton Town and appeared over 220 times for Brentford.

In November1971, towards the end of his career, he played for Southern League club, Margate FC in an FC Cup tie at Bournemouth and had 11 put past him.

The ending for Chic Brodie could have come earlier when playing for Brentford against Millwall, in a Third Division match, on November 6th 1965, at Griffin Park. Needless to say it was the Millwall fans that threw a hand grenade into Chic's goalmouth, to distract him. Cool as a cucumber Chic picked it up and threw it in to the back of his net. He later found out it was a dud!

Chic later became a taxi driver and sadly fell foul to Prostate Cancer, dying in 2000.
