NEW YEAR'S EVE

Where better to end the year (2019) than in Scotland, with a Scotsman, Alexander Chapman Ferguson. Born on December 31st 1941 in Govan, Glasgow, the son of a coalminer, he made his debut for the historic amateurs, Queen's Park at 16 in 1957.

Prior to this he was part of the Harmony Row Boys' Club team and then Drumchapel Amateurs whose home was Duntocher, playing in the Central Scotland Amateur Football League.

Other successful products of the Drumchapel Amateurs FC are:
Walter Smith, David Moyes (in the news!), Andy Gray, Archie Gemmill, Eddie McCreadie, John Wark, Asa Hartford, John Robertson.

After Queen's Park, he played as a forward for:
St Johnstone 1960, Dunfermline Athletic 1964, Rangers 1967, Falkirk 1969 and Ayr 1973-4.
He played for Scots Amateurs once, for a Scottish XI 7 times and for the Scottish Football League twice.

Management was with East Stirling up to 1974, St Mirren 1978, Aberdeen 1986, Scotland 1985-6, Manchester United 1986-2013.

His son Darren ventured into football too, unsurprisingly starting at United from 1990-4 with 27 appearances, Wolverhampton Wanderers for 117 games, Sparta 1999,  until 2007, then manager at Peterborough 2009, Preston until 2010, Peterborough 2015, Doncaster 2018, Peterborough 2019.
