I hope this newsreel (above) works and shows the 20 goals scored by Stirling Albion at ANNFIELD against the hapless Selkirk, an amateur side, in the Scottish FA Cup 1st Rd. It's December 8th 1984.
It was the highest score in a senior match in Scotland in the 20th Century, with 8 players from the "professionals" scoring and Dave Thompson scoring 7 and Willie Irvine 5. It was 5-0 at half time so the writing was on the wall. Richard "Midge" Taylor was presented with the match ball at the end of the game....he had probably seen enough of it actually. Here are the chaps and note which one is the goalie!!!Manager Alex Smith went on to manage St Mirren and Aberdeen whilst "Midge" Taylor went to get in his Skoda, the next day at home, only to find that his number plates had been nicked. Taylor later left the area but did not migrate to Australia, which Frank Haffey did! Who? Yes Frank Haffey was the Scottish international goalie at Wembley when England beat the Scots 9-3 in 1961.The next week Selkirk played Gala Amateurs in the Walls Cup and only lost 6-2.
Albion have moved to Forthbank since.
The name 'Albion' supposedly came from the make of Fergusson's coal trucks. This however is an urban myth. Albion Coal lorries were used as grandstands but the Club was named at a meeting of fans long before a ball was kicked. (Reference, Stirling Journal Newspaper, 1945.) The name Albion was chosen because it was an old word for Great Britain and held meaning for the founder.
My wife and I were finishing the arduous Milford Track in South Island, New Zealand, on this day!
