5,000

Wednesday 12th November was the day that I published the first "page" of this blog. Bill Rogers, a man who knows media, showed me what to do, seemingly simple but nevertheless I needed a leg up, and BBC Bill came up with the goods. So thanks to him, a handful of readers have something to look forward to daily and I get to search the www. for half an hour or so on a suitable topic. I like to have a theme, topical or historic. Today, it's a "shoe in"; Leeds United v Liverpool.

The first blog on that November day was about my "hero", Stanley Matthews and since that I have published 4999. In 2014 there were 183 editions, but then, I started mid year. In the years from 2015 = 315, 347, 350, 347, 350. In 2020 there were 360.This year 247.

Today notches 5,000, assuming nothing happens to me in the next few hours. If I was at Elland Road I could possibly find myself in a challenging situation as Leeds United host Liverpool FC. Sparks might fly. This is the 119th meeting which Leeds have won 28, Liverpool 60 and Drawn 31. The first was on November 22nd 1924: Liverpool won 1-0 in Division 1. They met regularly in Div 1 until 1947.

There was a meeting in the Post-War North Region League on April 10th 1946 Leeds won 3-0 and drew 1-1. They next met in Div 2 at Leeds 2-2. They met in Division Two from 1955-1961. From then it was then Division One and Premier League through to today. They met in the 1965 FA Cup Final Liverpool won 1-2 in extra time..  Revie v Shankly.

Another meeting was in the Charity Shield 10th August 1974 1-1 and few sendings off.

Other Cup ties include: 1971 Inter Cities Fairs Cup semi-final: Leeds won 1-0 over two legs: FA Cup 1972 Leeds 2-0 (after 0-0) 1972 League Cup 4th Rd Liverpool won and a few other clashes in Cups 1974, 1992,1996, 2001, 2009, 2016, Liverpool winning 4.

In the Premier League, Liverpool have won 15 times (scoring 52 goals in all games), with 4 drawn and Leeds have won 6 (scoring 26 goals in all games)

Leeds United became the first newly-promoted team to score three or more goals at the reigning Premier League champions since Hull City lost 3-4 at Manchester United on 1 November 2008. This was the first time that the Whites had lost their opening game in a season in the the top division since a 5-1 loss at Swansea City in League Division One on 29 August 1981. 65 year-old Marcelo Bielsa become the second oldest manager to take charge of his first game in the top division in the post-war era after Dick Advocaat, who was 67 years old when he took charge of Sunderland in March 2015.

Mohamed Salah became the fifth player to score three or more hat tricks for Liverpool in the PL. also Robbie Fowler (eight), Michael Owen (seven), Luis Suárez (six) and Fernando Torres (three). The Reds had now scored four or more goals in at least one league game in every season since 1920-21; the longest such run by any Premier League or Football League club. Mohamed Salah became the second player to score in the opening game in four consecutive seasons in the Premier League; also Teddy Sheringham from 1992-93 to 1995-96.
