LIGHTNING AND STRIKES

Well, for a Thursday, it has been an eventful day. The first issue came latish in the day, at our Walking Football session (4-5pm at Penistone Church FC) where we "elderly gentlemen" were worrying about lightning stikes, which did not happened, but the atmospheric conditions were spot on for a bit of thunder and lightning. I am still here to tell the tale.....but for many sportsmen and women, in the past, lightning has been fatal.  John White was a wonderful footballer-a Scot and Spurs' inside right, who fell foul to lightning on a golf course at the age of 27 in 1964.

White first played at senior level for Alloa Athletic. He debuted in the 1956/57 season. He was paired White in an effective inside forward combination with Dennis Gillespie. In the 68 league appearances White made for The Wasps, he scored 26 goals in 68 apps. He then went to Falkirk (30 apps/8 goals) and Spurs, 1959-64, 183 apps/40 goals earning a Double winners' medal along with 22 Scottish caps.

Outdoor sports of course are likely to be affected by such conditions and there have been many moments when football matches have not be able to respond to safety quick enough, as this film of a lightning strike in a South Africa shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VcBQOio54M

My next incident was a minor confrontation between two players, apparently both of some maturity, on our Walking Football pitch. The players were all chums and had played WF for months/years together.....No need to go into details but it led me to the subject "coming together" on a footy pitch.....such emotion! It must have been a bad day for our chaps?? Here is NOT our moment!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpoVkulGrto 5 minutes worth.

BY the way, John White would never get into such a tangle!
