DAY LATE

October 4th 1933

Matt Busby is best known as a manager of Manchester United but as a player he made over 300 League appearances for United's great rivals Liverpool and Manchester City. He also made one full international appearance for his native Scotland - on 4th October 1933 - a 3-2 defeat by Wales in Cardiff in the Home Championship.

Liverpool  and City met at Anfield yesterday, the game vital in the Premier League and significant in the meeting of these two clubs.

Founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), it became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and Manchester City in 1894. The club's home ground is the City of Manchester Stadium in east Manchester, to which it moved in 2003, having played at Maine Road since 1923. The club adopted their sky blue home shirts in 1894 in the first season of the club's current iteration, and have been used ever since.

Manchester City entered the Football League in 1892, and won their first major honour with the 1904 FA Cup.

Liverpool F.C. was founded following a dispute between the Everton committee and John Houlding (below), club president and owner of the land at Anfield. After eight years at the stadium, Everton relocated to Goodison in 1892 and Houlding founded Liverpool F.C. to play at Anfield. Originally named "Everton F.C. and Athletic Grounds Ltd" (Everton Athletic for short), the club became Liverpool F.C. in March 1892 and gained official recognition three months later, after The FA refused to recognise the club as Everton.

Liverpool played their first match on 1 September 1892, a pre-season friendly against Rotherham Town FC, which they won 7–1. The team Liverpool fielded against Rotherham was composed entirely of Scottish players – the players who came from Scotland to play in England in those days were known as the Scotch Professors. The team won the Lancashire League in its debut season and joined the FL Second Division at the start of the 1893–94 season. After the club was promoted to the First Division in 1896, Tom Watson was appointed manager. He led Liverpool to its first league title in 1901, before winning it again in 1906.
