POLPERRO FC, RESERVES and St Piran

Saturday's venture into Cornish football included a trip to Polperro AFC where their Reserves, playing mostly in the St Piran League East Cornwall Division, faced up to a strong breeze and Bude Town Reserves. The Polperro club is sponsored partly by the Fowey Shellfish Company and FCS Ltd, who ever they might be.

Polperro AFC, founded in 1901, play at Killigarth, a rural ground, set in an area mostly covered by holiday chalets on steep hills, halfway between Polruan and Looe. The First team plays in the Kernow Stone St Piran League, their season much disturbed by Covid, but at the moment the club lies 4th in the division, unbeaten in 4 fixtures, although some clubs have played 8 fixtures already. Today away at St Ives, too far for us old men to travel, Polperro 1sts shared 10 (ten) goals in a 4-6 win in the League Cup.
So instead our gang watched the Polperro Reserves soundly beat Bude Town Reserves 4-1 at Killigarth.

The wind was fresh, the game generous and without incident, apart from some spectacular ball work from MJB behind a goal, retrieving a ball shot wildly past the net.

A huge crowd of around 20, many of whom were comfortable in their cars parked a few feet from the touchline, enjoyed a lively game with good behaviour all round. I might congratulate the home team on a pleasant looking "new" clubhouse, which stuck in the middle of a field, far away from civilisation, looked vulnerable?? Nevertheless, it seemed a well looked after club.

The St Piran Football League is an English Football league that was founded in 2019 to act as a feeder league to the South West Peninsular leage at step 7 of the National League System. 14 clubs compete in this.

St Piran was a 5th-century Cornish abbot and saint, of Irish origin.
He is the patron saint of tin miners and is also generally regarded as the patron saint of Cornwall.
The flag is a white cross on a black background, traditionally the emblem of the Cornish tinners, is regarded as the Cornish "nation a" flag. St Piran's day falls on 5 March.
