On this day in 1982, when Danish footballer, Allan Simonsen was transferred to his only English club you just had to check to see if it was April 1st because it was unreal. The former European Footballer of the Year was on the move from Barcelona and turned down Real Madrid in preference to joining......Second Division Charlton Athletic! His debut on this day in 1982 for Charlton against Middlesbrough saw their crowd double from their previous League match at the Valley - but that was only from 5,278 to 10,807. Sadly Charlton could only afford his wages for four months before he was on the move again but he had scored 9 goals in 16 League outings and the memories were real!
On the other hand, Harry Kane, the Tottenham striker, has now scored 39 goals in competitive games for England, overtaking the previous record of 37 scored by Wayne Rooney. It also places him level in the all-time goalscoring ranking with the late Jimmy Greaves on 44.
The captain also became the first player to score a perfect hat-trick, which consists of goals scored by a header, a left-foot, and a right-foot, for England since David Platt in February 1993 against San Marino. It was his fourth international hat trick.
Top England goal scorers are: Rooney 53, Bobby Charlton 49, Gary Lineker 48, Michael Owen 40, Tom Finney 30, Alan Shearer 30, Nat Lofthouse 30.
