ENGLAND'S FIRST TIE IN EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP and FRANCIS LEE

October 3rd 1962
England played their first match in the European Championship - then the European Nations' Cup - a first leg qualifier against France played in front of 35,380 at Hillsborough. A Ron Flowers (Wolves) penalty at 57 minutes, gave England a 1-1 draw. Walter Winterbottom was in charge for that match but Alf Ramsey made his debut as England manager when the second leg was played the following February in Paris - England lost that one 5-2!
