THE WARRINGTON DERBY

For the first time since 1978, neighbours Warrington Town and Warrington Rylands met each other in a competitive fixture, at Town's Cantilever Park. on October 4th. They both currently compete in the Northern Premier LeaguePremier Division, the seventh tier of English football. The derby ended in a draw, 3-3, a thriller derby, the first meeting in 44 years between these two sides. This 3-3 draw concluded with a comeback drama, late goals and red card, limbs, pyros, pitch invasions and scraps. Midfielder Irwin in goal for Rylands proving outfield players are just as good.

Town moved to Cantilever Park, which had a capacity of 2,500, as of November 2014. It takes its name from the Cantilever Bridge, a high-level road bridge on Ackers Road over the Manchester Ship Canal, that towers over the ground to the east. The ground itself is on the northern bank of the canal.

Warrington Town Football Club is a club based in Warrington, Cheshire. 

It was established in 1949 under the name of Stockton Heath, adopting their current name in 1961. Roger Hunt, later a World Cup winner with England in 1966. The club 's nickname is "The Wire", reflecting the local industry. (also creatively known as "Town" and "The Yellows".

Warrington Rylands 1906 Football Club, known as Ryalnds, is a neighbouring town club, that currently plays in the Northern Premier League, Premier Division, nicknamed "The Blues". The club was founded as Rylands F.C. in 1906 as a works team from a manufacturer of wire. The club started playing in the Liverpool County League and then joining the Warrington and District League. The 1950s saw the club became champions of the Warrington & District Football League Premier Division 6 times in a row, commencing from the 1953–54 season.

The 1968–69 season saw the club join the Mid-Cheshire League. The 1980–81 season saw the club finish as champions of the league, as well as make their debut in the FA Vase.

The club collected another league championship trophy in the 1983–84 season. In 2008 the club merged with fellow Mid Cheshire league side Crossfields F.C. becoming Crossfields/Rylands F.C. After two seasons, the club reverted to Rylands F.C.

On 15 July 2016, Wayne Rooney's agent Paul Stretford stated he is aiming to get Rylands to the EFL, after investing £100,000 on ground improvements. On 2 April 2018 the club published a letter from Paul Stretford which confirmed his proposed takeover will proceed, subject to due diligence. The 2018–19 season saw the club move to Division one south of the Nort-west Counties League, winning it at the first attempt, so gaining promotion to the Premier Division. In the 2019–20 season the club took part in their first-ever FA Cup qualifying campaign.

The club announced a name change in August 2020 to Warrington Rylands 1906 FC to reflect their locality.
