NICE ONE CYRIL AND PETER

Wolverhampton Wanderers were a free scoring club in the 1950s and on September 3rd 1955 at Ninian Park, they beat Cardiff City 9-1, to equal the highest away score to date in a top flight match. Previously Sunderland's beating of rivals Newcastle United 9-1 in 1908-9, stood alone. Wolves' Johnny Hancocks scored in 30 seconds to set the ball rolling against the Welsh and he eventually completed a hat trick, as did Roy Swinbourne. Roy Broadbent and Jimmy Mullen competing the rout. Over 40,000 watched this game.

By December 31st 1955, Christmas and the prospect of New Year's celebrations clearly overwhelmed the Wolves, who suffered their first home defeat to Cardiff 2-0, ending a run of 10 wins and a draw at Molineux.

Peter Knowles left a successful career in football with Wolves in 1969 to become a Jehovah's Witness. The link is worth a read.

He was scouted from Wath Wanderers, a source of several good players, including Alan Sunderland, Bob Hatton, Ron Flowers and Roy Swinbourne. Never one to shirk publicity, Peter once booted the match ball out of the ground after his team had recovered from 0-2 down to Portsmouth at Fratton Park. When he contributed to the 3-2 win, he thumped the ball into the nearby street in celebration and was promptly sent a bill by Pompey for the cost of the ball. Billy Bragg's song "God's Footballer" published in 1991 reflects Peter's life, who is now 74 years old.

His brother Cyril had gone to Middlesbrough and then made his name at Spurs. He is known for being subject of the hit song "Nice One Cyril" performed by The Cockerill Chorus, in March 1973.
