BRASSED OFF

Take it or leave it, today Hepworth United met at Far Lane, Grimethorpe Miners' Welfare FC in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Premier League (Step 7); a fiesty but generally fair contest which Hepworth, playing at home, lost as they defended the slope and gave away a 2-0 advantage.
Grimethorpe may be best known for their band!

The game was lively on a lush pitch but generally good natured and even livelier around the pitch where the visiting crowd enjoyed the fresh air, Stella and the cows over the wall.
Hepworth Utd was celebrating its 50th birthday, having been reformed in 1969 and a dozen or so old members turned up and had a bit of a reunion.
Claire Field made this cake which was appreciated and eaten by all! A really wonderful creation.

GMWFC was founded in 1959, obviously a club formed out of miners and former miners and friends. They are now less attached to the coal industry, and play in the Sheffield and Hallamshire League, Premier Division.
Grimethrope has both Anglo-Saxon and Viking origins, with Grimey Thorp, a hamlet owned by Grimey!

The settlement has appeared in "Viz's" Billy the Fish, who played for Fulchester Utd the arch rivals of  Grimethorpe City FC.
The Colliery band was founded in 1917  and starred in the film "Brassed Off", a story of National competition between colliery bands. The band has also played at the Proms.
The band is involved in Roy Harper's HQ Album, "When an old cricketer leaves his crease" and also backed Peter Skellern's two albums as well as having many other national and global appearances.
