With Derby County losing comfortably to Manchester United 0-3, this week in the FA Cup, the two clubs had not met in any form since August 15th 2008, when both teams were in the Premier League.
They first met in the Premier League in September 1996 and had spells when one or the other club was relegated, so therefore didn't play each other.
The two clubs previously met in the Football League Division 1 on April 16th 1991 and these Division One meetings dated back to April 15th 1927, again with odd separations due to relegation.
Prior to that the two met annually in Division Two between February 1923 and April 1925.
Before that they met in Division One between 31st December 1892 and May 7th 1921.
There have been 12 FA Cup ties, the first in February 1896, a drawn tie 1-1 against Newton Heath (as United were known then) with Derby winning the replay 5-1. They met again a year later with Derby winning 2-0. United have won most of their Cup ties against Derby.
When the two have met in the FA Cup in 2018, 2016, 1983, 1976, 1948, United got to the Final, winning three finals:
2016 v Crystal Palace, 1983 v Brighton HA and 1948 v Blackpool. They lost to Chelsea in 2018 and Southampton in 1976.
In Manchester United's FA Cup winning year, 1948, they beat Derby 3-1 in the semi-final. United then beat Blackpool in the Final at Wembley, where the London Olympics were next in the Stadium's Diary. Matt Busby was the United manager at the time and he saw his team come from 2-1 down to win 4-2, in one of the more memorable finals. It was the club 's first Cup Final win since 1909 and they deserved their success beating First Division (top flight) teams in every round.
There have been three League Cup ties in 1969, 2009 and September 2018.
Overall then, United have won 47 games, drawn 29 and lost 32.
