On April 9th 1938 the traditional England v Scotland match was first televised from Wembley and yes, England lost 0-1.

and oh yes, its Spurs' Giovani Lo Celso's birthday today. The Argentine is 24.

In January 1969, when Matt Busby announced his potential retirement, rather than step down completely, Busby "stepped upstairs". After three months when Noel Cantwell and Brian Clough were in the frame to take over, the Manchester United' board gave reserve team coach Wilf McGuinness a trial appointment (ON THIS DAY).

After two weeks, after United lost the first leg of the European Cup semi-final against Milan 0-2 and despite Bobby Charlton helping United to a 1-0 win in the return, this wasn't enough.
United also finished 11th in the division.

In McGuinness's first season, Best was on his way out, Busby was hanging on and United came 8th in the league.

On the strength of that, he was given a permanent contract. Wilf's reign lasted four months and never came to a head. United lost a League Cup semi-final to Third Division Aston Villa, were 5th from bottom in the league, so he was sent back to the reserves in early 1970.

Busby stepped in to help, United couldn't persuade Revie or Shankly to take over from Busby and so the board appointed Frank O'Farrell.
