VARIOUS 8th APRIL HEROICS
On this day in 1988, at 17 years and 240 days, on his debut, Alan Shearer became the youngest hat trick scorer in top flight football, when at The Dell, he led Southampton to a 4-2 win over Arsenal.

He became the all time leading goal scorer in the Premier League, overtaking Jimmy Greaves' 30 year old record. JG below is unwell but not the dreaded virus; a stroke it is reported!
In 2000, on the same day, Manchester City walloped Crewe Alexandra in the old Second Division, the second tier, and soon were on their way to the Premier League as Champions. Much has changed.
This day, 2001, FA Cup Semi-Final winners were Liverpool, thumping WYCOMBE WANDERERS 2-1 at Villa Park. Tight game. Heskey opened the scoring in 78 mins, then Fowler 83 and after Ryan for the minnows had scored after 88 mins to make it 2-1. There were a few hairy moments towards the end of this cup tie but that was that.
Wycombe worked their way through the early rounds from
Rd1 Harrow Borough 3-0;
Rd2 Millwall 2-0 after a 0-0;
Rd3 away to Grimsby 1-3;
Rd4 WW v Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1;
Rd5 WW v Wimbledon after a draw 2-2 and another one 2-2 and pens 7-8!;
Rd6 Leicester City 1 WW 2;
Semi-final v Liverpool as above.
In the other 2001 semi-final, saw Arsenal beat Spurs (Doherty 14) at Old Trafford with goals from Vieira (33) and Pires (74), a scoreline that flattered the Spurs.
