BERT TRAUTMANN ON ANTIQUES' ROADSHOW

It wasn't quite May 2nd, actually it was May 5th 1956 when Bert Trautmann played for Manchester City in the FA Cup Final at Wembley and made history; the photo shows when he broke a bone in his neck making a save and he played on helping his team to victory.

I have written about Bert before, after I had seen a film about his life in the Cinema. This evening much to my enjoyment, there was an article on "The Antiques Roadshow" about his life, his letters and Fiona Bruce covered the memorabilia with her usual calm and care. At the moment, Manchester City by one fortune or another are top of the pops in English Football. In 1956, they became FA Cup winners beating Birmingham City 3-1. 100,000 watched Trautmann's bravery (see photo) and in the other goal was another of England's great goalkeepers, Gill Merrick.
