HEBBURN/CONSETT AND THE FA VASE BROTHERS

BROTHERLY love will be completely forgotten about when Hebburn play Consett in the Buildbase FA Vase final at Wembley this afternoon.

Thirty-one-year-old identical twins Amar and Arjun Purewal will line up against each other in today's all-Northern League final for the 2020 "BT TV Free to Air" FA Vase – striker Amar for Hebburn and defender Arjun for Consett. They are the first pair of identical twins to play in a major final at Wembley, as well as being the first Asian players. They are best friends, of course and work together in their family business. “It’s also great for the Asian community. Amar and I represent a lot of people in this game, and it’s a way of showing Asians that they can make progress in football, and if they do work hard enough, then they can take part in big occasions like this; it’s good to know that we’re raising awareness. Amar played for Darlington and Arjun for Blyth, when the clubs played each other in the FA Cup in 2014, and they’ve played against each other for West Auckland and Consett respectively in the Northern League.

Amar, who was part of the Darlington team that enjoyed three promotions under Martin Gray, has already played for West Auckland in the 2019-20 competition, but has been given special dispensation by the FA to play for Hebburn, for whom he signed last summer. He played for them in the semi-final win over Corinthians last September, when he partnered another former Darlington player, Graeme Armstrong, up front.

“It will be a real shame that there will be no fans in the ground, it would have been great to have some in cheering us on.” Arjun will be the proud skipper of Consett when he leads the team out into an empty stadium.

“It’s a great day for the club, the biggest in its long history,” he said. “It’s been bizarre preparing for the game, because we haven’t played any league games for a while. We came back into training at the end of March, and it’s been much like a pre-season. Every game we’ve played so far, we’ve tried to make as competitive as possible, for example, we’ve had some difficult tests against Sunderland Academy and England Universities.
SO to the Final, that has now been completed, was decided with a win for Hebburn Town 3-2, the winning goal scored at 83 minutes, by Oliver Marton, the sub brought on at 78 mins. Here are the winners
The FA Trophy is being played for as I write this. Hebburn of course is sited between Jarrow and Gateshead on the south bank of the Tyne, in Tyne and Wear. Population around 17,000. Well known for having a busy coal industry and the site where the Davy lamp was first tested early in the 19th Century...don't know what a Davy Lamp is? Shame on you....Look it up! Shipbuilding and the railways led to further industrial development.
