It's Good Friday and an opportunity for the Football League to bare its "chest". Plenty of league matches going on, so with a few fixtures left, the results are quite important to the ups and downs. The club is Nicknamed "The Irons" after the region's Iron Industry....Geographers/Economists etc etc should be nodding their heads knowingly.
Here is a clip from the Irons' match at Forest Green on April 2nd. It's not going their way:https://www.skysports.com/football/forest-green-rovers-vs-scunthorpe-united/report/448912
NEXT: April 9th: Mansfield moved up to fourth place in League Division 2, with a 4-0 win at bottom side Scunthorpe, leaving "The Irons" 72-year stay in the English Football League teetering on the brink.
Here is the clip:

Only Oldham and Barrow's failure to win, granted Scunthorpe what is likely to be a brief stay of execution, and play was held up for four minutes in the second half as around 30 disgruntled fans entered the pitch, shortly after a number of tennis balls had been thrown from the stands.
Results elsewhere may have spared the Iron's fate this day, but a first-ever stint in the National League is all-but inevitable with Scunthorpe 13 points from safety with only 15 left to play for.
Scunthorpe is the worst club in the EFL, 13 points behind their nearest rivals. Their results do not make good reading.........

Scunthorpe United was formed in 1899. In 1910 they merged with local rivals North Lindsey United to become Scunthorpe & Lindsey United and joined the Midland League in 1912. There was an unsuccessful application to join the FL in 1921, when it expanded but to no avail. Scunthorpe & Lindsey stayed in the Midland League and won it in 1926–27 and in 1938–39. When the 1939–40 season came to an abrupt end, due to the war, Scunthorpe & Lindsey finished as runners-up in the second emergency competition.
After the end of the war, in 1945, Scunthorpe & Lindsey United re-applied to join the Football League at every opportunity. The club finished as runners-up in the Midland League in 1947–48, and in 1950 was eventually accepted into the Football League, when the league structure was expanded. After an unremarkable few years in the Football League, the "& Lindsey" was dropped from the club's name in 1958.
Glanford Park, their home ground was completed in 1988, it was the first new purpose-built FL stadium to be built in England for 33 years, since Southend Utd moved to Roots Hall in 1955.
The stadium is Scunthorpe's second ground, with the Iron having previously played at the Old Show Ground from 1899 to 1988. Notable past payers include Kevin Keegan, Ray Clemence and Ian Botham!
Sadly The Irons (Scunny) will leave the FL today and be transported to the National League. Can you name the clubs in the NL who have played in the FL?
