I play in goal for the Walking Football mob at Penistone Church FC. I have made a few errors in my time! So I reflect on the pressure goalies are put under AND sometimes not very much pressure!
I did referee a friendly between a school U18 team and a friendly adult side. It was a windy day, wind rushing down a gently sloping pitch. The school goalie took a goalkick, uphill, into the very strong wind. The ball reached the centre circle (so ;eft the penalty area), rose with the wind and was "driven" back towards the goalie at some speed. It gained height and then dipped downwards towards the kicker. He saw it bounce outside the penalty area (the ball was therefore "in play" and it skipped on towards him, as he was standing on the penalty spot. He made an attempt to stop the ball, which was travelling at some pace by now, overhead and got a hand to it, BUT the ball carried on undeterred into his net! REF?? The goalkick left the penalty area so was in play. It didn't hit the ground outside the penalty area?? Decision?? The ball was touched by the goalie and landed in side the penalty area before it entered his net."A goalkeeper is unable to score an own goal directly from a goal kick. If such a scenario happens where he kicks the ball into his net from a goal kick, a corner will be awarded to the opponent’s team. There is another part in Law 16 which mentions this: A goal may be scored directly from a goal kick, but only against the opposing team; if the ball directly enters the kicker’s goal (somehow??) a corner kick is awarded to the opponents if the ball left the penalty area."
