SCUNNY

THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED YESTERDAY......don't know what happened! AND here's one I did about The Irons earlier....

After moving from Scunthorpe United, on this day (14th June!!!), Kevin Keegan made his League debut for Liverpool on the opening day of the 1971/72 First Division season, scoring after 12 minutes of the 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Ironically, Forest are featured on TV in their Premier League match v West Ham and are 1-0 up as I type.

Scunny are presently resting lowly in the National League and are known only as Scunthorpe. Having lost at Maidenhead United yesterday, in front of just over 1,000 in the crowd, they linger second from "root", saved from the ultimate embarrassment by Altrincham but cheer up Scunny only 6 matches played, plenty to go.

For those unsure about the "Iron" link, Scunthorpe is known for it's Iron and Steel industry.
The
ir next fixture is in two days v Woking at 19.45.

Scunthorpe Utd (nicknamed "The Iron") play at Glanford Park.

For most of its existence in the professional game (since only 1950) Scunny has been in the lower leagues of the EFL. At the end of the 2006–7 season they won promotion to the FL Championship, as champions of League One, amassing a total of 91 points, This was the first time they have played at this level for 44 years. This was to last just one season as the club were relegated on 12 April 2008, with three games to spare. However, they returned to the Championship after one season, winning the League One playoffs in May 2009.

The team will play in the National League after being relegated in 2022 from League Two.

England stars Kevin Keegan and Ray Clemance both played for The Iron, in the early 1970s before being signed for Liverpool. Former England cricket captain Ian Botham played a number of games for the club, being a resident of nearby Epworth, at that time and in an attempt to keep fit during the winter months.

The team mascot is called the "Scunny Bunny".

Fancy a visit? There is plenty to do whilst your here waiting to watch football. In the centre of the town you can visit amazing attractions such as 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, North Lincolnshire Museum, The Pods or take in the newest film releases at the Vue Cinema. If you enjoy live performances, there is the Baths Hall or the Plowright Theatre. And here's some BUS porn!, a local green one and a newer one.

and not to ignore Scunthorpe's location in Lincolnshire.
