NOBBY STILES, ARGENTINIANS AND ARBROATH SMOKIES

The 16th October conjours up some great footballing moments, including in 1968:

The first attempt by an English side to win the Intercontinental Cup ended the same way as had Celtic's try the previous season - in a bad-tempered defeat by the champions of South America. After losing 1-0 in the first leg in Argentina - Nobby Stiles was sent off -  European champions Manchester United met Estudiantes in the second leg in front of 63,500 at Old Trafford on this day in 1968. Juan Ramón Verón - the father of future United player Juan Sebastián Verón - scored for the visitors in the opening minutes, George Best was sent off and Willie Morgan equalised in the closing seconds so Estudiantes won the trophy 2-1 on aggregate.

and on the same date in 2002....

A gaffe from England’s David Seaman brought more criticism for the Arsenal ‘keeper when he allowed Macedonia’s Artim Šakiri to score direct from a corner kick. The 2-2 draw with Macedonia in a Euro qualifier at St Mary’s in Southampton.

And since we are in the mid-October week here's an amusing opportunity for football fans:

Sheer luxury! The pie prize that is....yes, he does look a bit like Jamie V!!
So the man-of-the-match signed the top of the tin for the photo, which has set social media alight this week in Arbroath!! Lois, 24, said: “It’s crazy, I can’t believe how mad the pic has gone. “We were on a girls’ day out at hospitality and it’s always really good fun.

Arbroath FC fan, Lois Caird, says she can’t believe a picture of Lichties legend, Bobby Linn, presenting her with Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie which has gone viral. The tinned treat was Lois' reward for predicting the timing of the first goal (6th min) in the Angus outfit’s clash with Dundee last weekend. But Muirfield Primary School assistant Lois – club chairman Mike Caird’s niece (bit of a coincidence??)– was narrowly pipped to the top prize. Instead, she landed the famous canned pie from ‘Bobby Linn’s Bin’ during the banter-filled afternoon in Gayfield’s aptly-named Caird Suite. It must have been a "blast".

and if you have a spare moment, what about this Italian Evening advertised for the 19th October and also the kids' hospitality, who of course should be in bed on a school day? (is it half term?)

HOPE you can read some of this advert-if not why not give the club a "call"!!!
