DECEMBER 8th YORKSHIRE

It's been a pre-Christmas jaunt today, travelling in East Yorkshire (not an official title for a part of the county), along the coast with Filey being the main port of call. I was taught by an Oxford University graduate, a "Dark Blue" footballer, a West Yorkshire Geographer, whose first job was at my Horsham based Collyer's School (now The Richard Collier College). Brian Hardcastle was a very typical WestYorkshire man, who inspired my interest in Geography and football. He played for Horsham while living in the area and he was involved in the famous FA Cup tie against Swindon (Don Rogers etc Remember him?), a few years ago!! I was there at Queen's Street, which was rammed.

The rest is History if you get my drift!

SO, I remember the names of  Yorkshire's major rivers, remembering SUNWACD! (can you?) It has been nice to be near all these river valleys during my day or two away from home and to think of BAH, toi whom I owe quite a lot. So here is a homage to him and to Yorkshire today.

Just to remind you of some famous Yorkshiremen .who have stood out in footballing history:
Herbert Chapman managed Huddersfield Town in the 1930s and then Arsenal. Hailing from:-
North Yorkshire:
Brian Clough, Bill Nicholson, Don Revie, Wilf Mannion, Chris Kamara, Marco Gabbiadini, Tony Mowbray and in
South Yorkshire:
Tommy Taylor...Munich United, Keith Burkinshaw...COYS, Gordon Banks, Howard Wilkinson, Kevin Keegan, Graham Rix, David Seaman, the Greenhoff bros, Mick McCarthy
From West Yorks:
Len Shackleton...who?...come on you should know! The CLOWN Prince...,Trevor Cherry, David Batty, Paul Madeley, David Harvey,. Stuart McCall..falls off cars LEEDS LEEDS!
From East Yorkshire...a less densely populated region:
Nick Barmby....Hull, Dean Windass...once of Hull..now an after dinner speaker.....who isn't, Paul Robinson from Beverley...remember that air shot?
I know there are many more recent stars but you know I enjoy nostalgia.....

and recently-Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker, John Stones (Penistone-see map!!), Danny Rose, Fabian Delph, Aaron Lennon, Gary Cahill, James Milner.

AND FINALLY for history sake.
On December 8th 1984, 371 people witnessed at Annfield, Stirling Albion in the Scottish FA Cup 1st Round v Selkirk (amateurs) setting a record for the highest score in a senior match in Britain in the 20th Century. Eight players scored for the Albion, Dave Thompson scored 7, half time was 15-0. The Selkirk keeper who must have had a blinder, for the second half went better for Selkirk who only let in 5 more-the final score 20-0. The keeper was presented with the ball.
