KILPIN AND BANKS

16th December 1899

On this day, a group of English expats, led by Herbert Kilpin (below) and Alfred Edwards, formed the Milan Cricket and Football Club .... a club, now the mighty AC Milan! Although no longer renowned for playing cricket, AC Milan still pay tribute to their English founders by using the English spelling of their home town in their club name - Milan - rather than using the Italian spelling - Milano. Kilpin's footballing career went on with the recently re-established Notts Olympic and then for St. Andrew's, a church team, based near the Forest Recreation Ground on Gregory Boulevard.

In 1891, Kilpin moved to Turin, in Italy, in order to work for Edoardo Bozio, an Italian-Swiss textile merchant with links to a Nottingham lace manufacturer. In the same year Bosio founded Internazionale Torino, believed to be the first full fledged Italian football club. Kilpin played for the team, becoming the first-ever Englishman to play football abroad

December 16th 1989, Barnsley substitute, Ian Banks (a formidable character) received a red card without stepping on to the pitch. Barnsley, 20th in Division Two, were away at Bournemouth who were 16th and 1-0 down. Then Bournemouth scored their second goal, from what might have been an offside position and the Barnsley manager called on Banks. The midfielder warmed up on the touchline waiting to be waved on by the ref. Banks had a go at the nearby linesman for not raising his flag to get the attention of the ref. Reports do not mention Banks' actual words, but they certainly upset the lino, who drew this to the attention of the ref. The ref decided Banks' language justified a sending off; a straight red card. It was the quickest ejection for a substitute   in Football League history...down a man Barnsley proceded to lose 1-2. They did survive the season, finishing in 19th place, whilst opposition, Bournemouth finished 3 places lower! As 22nd in the division, they were relegated to the Third Division!!
