Happened to wander into a local Morrisons' Store this afternoon for 20 minutes, while the electric car was being charged up! You know, I cannot miss such an opportunity and low and behold there was a second hand book table at the front of the shop by the tills....there usually is one.....and on it was this little beauty (left) for sale.
Some lucky lad or gal, in 1949 must have received this as a present from his parents for Christmas (possibly his birthday?). The FA published a summary of the footballing year, including professionals (such as the FA Cup season), amateurs based on famous clubs or the Amateur Cup Final, news from China and Schools' Football and an anniversary message from The Football Association written by Sir Stanley Rous, the FA Secretary. The County Youth tournament and internationals for that age group were published....there is much more and sadly to cover all "bases" in modern football, the book would have to be very big. But of course these days, you can get onto TheFA website and see what's there. Cartoons???!!!
Other contents included the FA Cup Final, FA Amateur Cup news, How to tie your boot laces, an article from John Arlott (yes, the famnous cricket commentator), a quiz about being off-side, a crossword; it goes on. Ironically, the 1948 FA Cup Final programme below, came with the afternoon's "buy" and it includes Man Utd beating Blackpool 4-2 and things have not gone well for the "Red Devils" today. Hey Ho, but the programme is in good nick and I paid a pittance for it...good investment?
