On January 11 2003, Charlton Athletic arrived at Stamford Bridge for their Premier League fixture against Chelsea. The visitors were soon "undone" by what the home team was laughably calling their pitch which was entirely made up from sand, with no blade of grass in sight. Alan Curbishly, the visitors manager, was reported to have said that "it reminded me of a piece of land about to have a patio laid on it". The visitors lost 1-4.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRwtNxz6b5A Over 27,000 watched this match.
A knock out blow came from Barrow defender, James Cotterill who was sentenced to four months in prison on this day in 2007, for punching Bristol Rovers striker Sean Rigg, in an FA Cup First Round tie, the previous November, held at Barrow's Holker Street ground. Rigg's jaw was broken in two places and he had to drink through a straw and eat with a teaspoon. His jaw was held in place by metal plates which would stay with him for the reat of his life. The match and incident were televised. Rigg managed to recover to match fitness within six weeks. "I didn't aggravate Cotterill in any way for him to react like that. But it happened and he broke my jaw in two places."
Cotterill was banned from all football activity by The FA until March 2007, and on 11 January 2007 he was jailed for four months after pleading guilty to causing grevious bodily harm. An appeal to free Cotterill had failed, however, he was soon released from prison on 14 February 2007, although he was forced to wear an electronic tag in his home town Barnsley until 11 March 2007. Hoping to re-build his life, Cotterill also thanked the Barrow fans who helped release him. Cotterill apologised to Sean Rigg saying he "never intended to hurt Sean".
